Postdoc position: LiDAR data for forest spatial structure assessment

We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher to study the structure and dynamics of forest ecosystems using terrestrial (TLS) and unmanned aerial vehicle laser scanning data (ULS). The position offers opportunities to work on projects focused on using structural vegetation indicators to derive acoustic attenuation properties of vegetation belts, the relationship between structural richness of forest stands and biodiversity, or on a project focused on obtaining inventory and structural characteristics of trees and forest stands.

Contractual relationship: Full-time or part-time employment contract for a fixed period

Term: 2 years with immediate start (or by agreement)

Location: Lidická Street, Brno, Czech Republic

Requirements:

• D. in ecology, forestry, geoinformatics, remote sensing, computer science, or a related field
• Experience with processing LiDAR data (TLS, ULS, ALS)
• Knowledge of programming and data analysis (e.g., R, Python, MATLAB, C++, SQL)
• Ability to think and work independently
• Excellent communication and presentation skills and ability to work in a team
• Ability to write and publish scientific texts
• Experience with international cooperation is an advantage.

Key tasks:

• Implementation, optimization, and development of algorithms for LiDAR data analysis
• Analysis of laser scanning data in relation to other variables (local biodiversity, acoustic properties, etc.) as well as on s single tree level
• Collection and processing of close-range LiDAR data (TLS, MLS, ULS)
• Working with virtual forest scenes and simulated data for testing, optimization, and algorithm development
• Collaboration at the international level
• Preparation of scientific publications and participation in professional conferences.
